I had some friends over the other day, and stopped into the store to pick up a few provisions before the big event. One of my buddies was early, so he tagged along. While in the store, it didn't take long to decide that we had totally different shopping strategies. Based upon some of my observations, I decided to write this post. Here are three of my favorite food shopping tactics. They've worked well for me, saving me a bundle on eating expenses. Try them out for yourself.
Stock up on Sale Items
You may scoff at saving 50 cents here or there on single items. Individually, they don't make much difference to your budget. The great thing is . . . you don't have to buy only one.
If you have the space and know that you'll use them, buy multiples of your favorite items during sales. Saving 50 cents may not affect you much, but buy ten of those items, and you're saving $5. Yeah, that's a little different.
Best for: Non-perishable items
Store Brands
Some people will buy only their favorite brands. Are these products really better? I can relate to those that prefer brand name flavors or ingredients. Well known companies can have a better ability at turning out quality products.
Mostly though, store brands are made by the same manufacturers. They are simply labeled differently. So, the question arises. Are you paying for the product, or are you paying for the name on the packaging?
Best for: Anything
Expiration Dates
Some food is perishable. After a period of time, it goes bad. Fortunately, this is a gradual process, and doesn't happen exactly on the date printed on the package (which often says "best by" anyway). Food can still be great days or even weeks after the supposed expiration date.
Don't waste food based on a manufacturer's guess of its freshness. Take it as it was meant. Check the food before you eat it, but eat it if it still meets your needs.
Stores will try to clear out their products expiring soon, lowering the prices. Look for these items, particularly if you eat them quickly or plan to freeze them. You can save a lot that way.
Best for: Meats and Breads
These three tips can form the backbone of a good grocery purchasing strategy. Trust me, the savings will add up. Food is one of those things that we can't do without, so you might as well use your resources efficiently. Good Eating!
